Disney artist makes a trip home
Disney animator and art director for the Disney movie “Moana” Andy Harkness is coming home to Starkville and will attend two events this weekend based around his children’s book “Bug Zoo.”
Harkness grew up in Starkville, graduated from Starkville High School and went into the Disney College Program as an intern in 1993. He has played a role in many animated Disney movies since “The Lion King” in 1994, and was an art director in the films “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Moana.” BOOK SIGNING EVENTS
On Friday, Harkness will attend a book signing event for
“Bug Zoo” at the Starkville Public Library.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. and Harkness will read his book and talk to attendees before signing copies.
On Saturday, the Book Mart and Cafe on Main Street will host “Bug Out with Andy Harkness” starting at 10 a.m. Harkness will read his book and sign copies, and there will be bug-themed crafts, face painting, games and refreshments. Book Mart and Cafe owner Carolyn Abadie said children are encouraged to wear bug or insect costumes.
THE ARTIST’S IMPACT
Nelle Elam, 83, is a retired art teacher at Starkville High School. Elam had Harkness as one of her students and hopes his visit will encourage young artists who see him.
Elam said she would incorporate a unit into her curriculum each year that focused on famous Mississippi artists.
“I would tell the kids, ‘they grew up just like you did and they had to work hard, but it can happen for you, as well,’” Elam said. “I would like to think that would be the same sort of thing Andy would convey.”
