Vols to host Wolverines on September 8

- By DANNY P. SMITH sports@starkvilledailynews.com

A nice relationship has developed over the years between the Starkville Academy Volunteers and the East Webster Wolverines.

The paths of the two area programs have crossed during the summer at seven-on-seven scrimmages and various camps.

Even though Starkville Academy and East Webster have become more and more familiar with each other, the two schools have never met on the gridiron during the season. That all changes this season.

On September 8 at J.E. Logan Field, the Vols host the Wolverines in what should be one of the most anticipated games in the area for 2017.

“We’re excited aI talked with (former East Webster) coach (Doug) Wilson back in the winter time and we had such a great relationship with East Webster for the past six or seven years, but had not played them during my time year, which has been two or three years now,” Starkville Academy head coach Chase Nicholson said. “We picked them up on the schedule and we are excited about the game itself.”

Since the Vols and the Wolverines have developed such a bond during the offseason, Nicholson sees this as a competitive game between friendly neighbors.

Nicholson expects it to be a very attractive and well-attended matchup.

“We’ve tried to help each other as much as we could,”

Nicholson said. “The close proximity and the fact some of our guys know their guys makes it a real exciting game for us and it should be a great

crowd on both ends.

“It’s just a great relationship and a friendly game to really be able to compete with each other.”

The Starkville AcademyEast Webster game could develop into the same type

of series that already exists between the Vols and the French Camp Panthers. Starkville Academy makes the trip to French Camp this season on August 25 in the second game of the season.

After playing at Noxapater

in jamboree action on August 11, the Vols open the season at home against Lamar School on August 18.

Starkville Academy has two-straight road games at French Camp and at Indianola Academy on September 1

before the game against East Webster.

The Vols travel to Magnolia Heights on September 15, then host Winston Academy on September 22 to open District 2-AAA play.

Homecoming at Starkville

Academy will be against Pillow Academy, then its back to district action for the rest of the season at Canton Academy on October 6, at Heritage Academy on October 13 and Leake Academy at home against Leake Academy.
