Gray gives Athletics solid outing in a victory despite trade rumors

OAKLAND, Calif. — Sonny Gray has no idea whether he will be traded or not, yet he soaked in the standing ovation when he walked off the Coliseum mound nonetheles­s.

Gray struck out six pitching into the seventh in what might have been his final home start in Oakland if the club tries to deal him before the trade deadline, and the Athletics rallied in the fifth inning to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-2 on Wednesday.

Matt Joyce hit a towering homer to the right-field seats in the eighth for Oakland.

Rajai Davis doubled home Oakland’s first run in the fifth then Joyce followed with a tying sacrifice fly before Davis scurried home with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 1

BOSTON — Dustin Pedroia drove in three, Drew Pomeranz pitched threehit ball into the seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays.

Pomeranz (10-4) allowed an unearned run over 6 2/3 innings to win his fourth straight decision and continues to be among Boston’s most dependable arms. He hasn’t lost since June 11, and the Red Sox are 9-3 in his past 12 starts. His ERA over the stretch is 2.62, dropping it from 5.29 to 3.51 for the season.

Orioles 10, Rangers 2

BALTIMORE — Kevin Gausman pitched six innings of four-hit ball, Adam Jones homered and scored three runs and the Baltimore Orioles beat the faltering Texas Rangers.

Mariners 4, Astros 1

HOUSTON — James Paxton had another strong start against Houston and rookie Ben Gamel powered the offense with a two-run homer to give Seattle a win over the Astros.
