Women’s Golf

-

A young Mississippi State women’s golf team looks to start the fall slate on a strong note as it ventures to Kiawah Island in South Carolina to compete in The Ocean Course Invitational.

Today marks the inaugural first round of the event hosted by the College of Charleston. The new tournament is a challenging one, presenting players strong winds much like playing in the United Kingdom or Ireland, as well as more seaside holes than any other course in the Northern Hemisphere. The Bulldogs and the remainder of the stellar field will be playing the same course that has hosted the 2007 Senior PGA and 2012 PGA Championship. It is only the fourth course to host each of America’s major championships.

MSU head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm and her team look forward to the challenge.

“The chemistry of this team is what championship programs are made of,” Brown-Lemm said. “It starts with the commitment of the ladies to our core values. That’s clearly in place with all of the girls on the team. We had an exceptional practice and qualifying rounds this week. I look forward to Monday and the first round of the Ocean Course Tournament.”

Heralded freshman Aubree Jones makes her MSU debut in the two-day event, with sophomore Ela Grimwood, transfer Clara Moyano and juniors Holt and Kendall Wisenbaker joining her in the lineup.

“We have all worked hard this summer and challenged ourselves, playing in various amateur tournaments,” junior Katie Holt said. “We have some great new players on the team this season and the team dynamic is on fire. We are ready to own the first tournament of the fall and play well.”

State is one of 16 teams and five Southeastern Conference squads in the field. The Bulldogs tee off the opening two rounds today in a 9 a.m. shotgun start. MSU plays its final round on Tuesday.
