The Around Town calendar is a free service offered by the Starkville Daily News. The calendars runs daily as space allows. Announcements should be submitted via e-mail to life@starkvilledailynews.com by 2 p.m. the day prior to publication and be no more than 50 words in length. ◆ District 5 VFD Meeting — The District 5 Volunteer Fire Department Annual Meeting will be held at 6 P.M. on Sep. 18 at the Oktoc Fire Station. All residents of the District are encouraged to attend to hear about the department's accomplishments and to elect board members

◆ Oktibbeha County Audubon Society Meeting — The Oktibbeha Audubon Society will meet Sep. 14 at 7 pm in MSU's Clay Lyle Entomology Building. Dr. Bill Parker will relate his whale watching experiences. The public is welcome

◆ WWI Special Collections at MSU — Sep. 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the John Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library veterans participate in the reading and discussion of correspondence from soldiers during World War I. This correspondence is from the Special Collections of Mississippi State University Libraries

◆ Memory and Aging Seminar — Sep. 21, from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m., this free seminar will be in Tully Auditorium in Thompson Hall. Dr. Deborah K. Eakin, memory and aging researcher at MSU, will present ways to improve your memory as you age. Topics include remembering names, dealing with word-finding issues, remembering lists, and distinguishing normal from dementia-related memory failures

◆ Mississippi Step Up For Kids — State and Local Politicians are invited to this free family event Free Family Event at Emerson Family School Sep. 28 from 4:30 p.m.6:00p.m. There will be Free T-Shirts, Hats, Bandana, Food and School Supplies

◆ Shackouls Honors College “Plautus Onstage” — MSU's Shackouls Honors College presents a public Lecture entitled: “Laughing with the Romans: Plautus Onstage” as part of its Classical Week celebration, Sep. 28 at 2 p.m. in the Forum Room, Griffis Hall. ◆ Starkville Symphony Performance — The Starkville Symphony's first concert of the season is scheduled for Sept 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Lee Hall on the MSU campus. The program will include pieces by Handel, Neruda, Walters, and Dvorak. The Symphony's concerts are free and open to the public

◆ Neighborhood Yard Sale — Plantation Homes will host a neighborhood wide yard sale on Sep. 16 from 9 am- 2 pm. All houses in Plantation Homes are invited to participate by selling their items in their own yard

◆ Canoe Day — Canoeing on Noxubee Refuge's Bluff Lake will be held on Sep. 16 from 9 am until 3 pm. Canoes, kayaks, life jackets, and paddles will be available free of charge. Call 323-5548 for more information

◆ Run United 5K — Run United 5K Kickoff Rae will begin 8 a.m. on Sep. 23. at the Starkville Sportsplex. Registration is $25 for early registration, $30 for late registration, and $35 the day of the race. The United Way is looking for volunteers to help.
