Coming off an impressive start to open the season with a win at the Golden Eagle Invitation­al, No. 24 Mississipp­i State is back in action today at the Falcon Classic in Montevallo, Ala.

The men's 8K is slated to begin at 8 a.m., followed by the women at 8:45 a.m.

“Like all sports, you're looking to get better each time out,” said MSU coach Houston Franks, whose team is ranked No. 2 in the South Region. “We've had ideal weather to train the last two weeks, and I'm looking forward to seeing how that translates this weekend. We've had a few injuries to deal with, and I want to see who is going to step up and show what they are capable of doing.”

After sitting out the first meet, junior Shannon Fair is making her debut this weekend.

She will be joined by Stephanie Peterson, Kristy Terp, Audrey Honiotes, Katherine Badham and Emma Tucker, all who finished in the Top 10 at the Falcon Classic. Peterson, a sophomore from Chattanoog­a, placed second with a time of 18:54.9.

After Saturday, MSU is off for two weeks before competing at the Paul Short Invitation­al in Allentown, Penn.

FAYETTEVIL­LE, Ark. – It was tied for nearly 88 minutes. Arkansas (5-4-0, 1-0 Southeaste­rn Conference) scored a late goal with 2:36 remaining as the Mississipp­i State soccer team (6-1-1, 0-1) dropped a 1-0 decision to the Razorbacks on Friday night at Razorback Field in the Southeaste­rn Conference opener for both squads.

State had an early chance in the second minute on a header by Payton Gruenewald that was saved by Arkansas keeper Jordan Harris.

Later, in the seventh minute, Mallory Eubanks had a prime scoring opportunit­y when she sent a shot right on target but into the hands of Harris.

MaKayla Waldner had an excellent scoring chance in the 32nd minute as she fired a shot that almost went past the keeper.

In the first half, both teams had several scoring chances, but defense reigned supreme as the half ended scoreless.

Catalina Perez ripped a free kick from near midfield as she fired a shot that caused a great commotion in the box in

Arkansas untied the contest on a goal in the 88th minute by Parker Goins, assisted by Nayeli Perez.

In net, Perez tallied a game-high five saves to lead the Bulldogs, which also tied her season-high.

Brooke McKee led the Bulldogs with four shots, including one that rattled off the post.

The Bulldogs out-cornered the Razorbacks 6-4 in the match.
