Wolverines will be fine

I’ve got to warn you before you read this column. I’m an optimistic guy.

I’m the type of person that if I’m outside and there is a hole in my bottle of water, I might just find a way to smile because, hey, at least the grass got watered. That’s just the way I’ve always lived my life.

It’s also the way I look at the East Webster football team despite the fact the Wolverines have now lost three of their last four games, including getting dominated 67-15 by defending state champion Calhoun City last Friday night.

Old, optimistic Joel says to the fans in Cumberland, ‘Don’t worry. The Wolverines will be just fine.’

Before I go any further, let me clarify by saying that I’m not predicting East Webster to make some kind of miraculous run to winning the golden football at the end of the season. I’m not even saying the Wolverines are destined to make the playoffs. What I am saying is that in my 32 years of life, I’ve never seen East Webster suffer a loss the way they did last Friday. I’d be shocked if I ever see it again anytime soon.

There’s just something special about East Webster athletics. Earlier on Friday, I watched a few innings of the Wolverines’ slow-pitch softball playoff games. I looked at the outfield fence and admired all the state title banners.
