Men’s Golf

-

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following a third-place finish in their season opener at the Bearcat Invitational, the Mississippi State men’s golf team will resume play today at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Old Overton Club in Birmingham, Ala.

“We are looking forward to competing this week,” State head coach Dusty Smith said. “We had a good week of preparation and are excited to get back out there.

“This is our next step in our season. It’s our job to play our brand of golf and to take ownership of that.”

Peng Pichaikool, Taylor Grant, Garrett Johnson and Cameron Clarke return to Smith’s lineup, while junior Ross Bell finishes the group and competes in his first tournament of the season.

The Bulldogs tee off the opening two rounds at 8:20 a.m. today. The tournament closes Tuesday with 18 holes.

MSU will compete against 12 teams including Southeastern Conference opponents Alabama, Arkansas and Auburn. Baylor, BYU, Charlotte, Michigan, Samford, South Alabama, UAB and UNLV make up the rest of the field.

Live scoring is available through Results.GolfStat.com. Old Overton Club plays to a par-70 at 7,204 yards.

Soccer

On a very humid Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field, Mississippi State dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Kentucky in Southeastern Conference soccer action.

The Bulldogs (7-3-3, 1-3-2 SEC) had plenty of chances against the Wildcats (7-8-0, 2-4-0). State led the Wildcats in nearly every offensive category, including taking 17 total shots to Kentucky’s nine, with the Bulldogs putting five shots on target to Kentucky’s three.

State’s first big opportunity came when a strike by Mallory Eubanks from just atop the 18-yard box was delivered on target, but it met the arms of Kentucky goal keeper Evangeline Soucie in the 12th minute.

For the entire first half and most of the second half, State displayed solid defensive effort in keeping the Wildcats at bay.

MSU goalkeeper Catalina Perez swatted a Kentucky corner kick out of a tremendous amount of traffic in the 6-yard box in the 21st minute.

Perez again displayed her outstanding leaping ability in the 25th minute when she reached high to punch a shot by Wildcat Eva Mitchell over the goal for one of her two saves on the day.

In the 28th minute, the Bulldogs again put the pressure on the Kentucky defense as two consecutive shots by Brooke McKee and a strike by Hayden Oswalt were blocked.

One of State’s best scoring chances of the day came to open the second half, as Eubanks had a one-on-one opportunity and fired a shot that was knocked away by Soucie. MSU’s MaKayla Waldner then collected the rebound but her shot was blocked out of play by a Wildcat defender, forcing a Bulldog corner kick.

Kentucky broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when Miranda Jimenez sneaked a shot just inside the post to give the Wildcats the lead.

The Bulldogs nearly scored the equalizer in the 66th minute when Carly Mauldin sent a header shot into the net, but an offside call negated the goal.

MSU again had an excellent scoring opportunity on a series of headers in the 81st minute, but McKee’s header shot flew just wide right of the goal.

Volleyball

COLLEGE STATION – Despite the overall aggressiveness from start to finish, Mississippi State fell to Texas A&M in three on Sunday at Reed Arena.

Texas A&M (5-7, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) defeated MSU (9-11, 0-6 SEC) 20-25, 15-25, 13-25 to extend the Bulldogs’ losing streak to six.

Set one went back and forth as no more than five points ever separated the two. Despite errors contributed by both sides (a combined 14), MSU had great communication the entire set capitalizing on kills. Jelena Vujcin had five to go along with her 6.5 points. The Aggies’ kills were the deciding factor as they took the set, 25-20.

The second was much like the first as kills and errors were the the deciding factors as the Bulldogs struggled to find their groove. A lack of aggressiveness was not the case, but MSU had no counterpunch for A&M’s attack game en route to 25-15 setback.

During the final set of play, the Bulldogs fought hard and had some sneaky plays. Unfortunately, it ended like the first two. MSU fought with so much aggressiveness, but could not add to the scoreboard, losing 25-13.

MSU travels to Columbia, Mo., on Friday to take on SEC opponent Missouri. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. on the SEC Network +.

Women’s Tennis

WACO, Texas – With all action at the H-E-B Invitational completed, the Mississippi State women’s tennis team went 2-0 in singles on the final day.

State’s newcomer Magda Adaloglou made quick work of Houston’s Lauren Alter 6-2, 6-0 in the consolation semifinals Sunday. Adaloglou finished the weekend 3-1 in singles for a combined 5-2 record over her short Bulldog career.

MSU sophomore Sara Lizariturry held off Houston’s Ana Glumac 7-5, 6-1 in consolation play Sunday. Lizariturry also finished the weekend 3-1 in singles.

Due to travel, the two Bulldogs did not face each other in the championship match of the consolation draw.

The Bulldogs have two weeks off before competing in the ITA Southern Regional Championships Oct. 19-23, hosted by Auburn. High School Football Division Standings
