Men's Tennis
Joining 14 other programs, six members of the Mississippi State men's tennis team will compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern Region Championships beginning today.
State is one of five Southeastern Conference programs represented at the tournament, along with host LSU, Alabama, Auburn and Ole Miss.
MSU freshman Hunter Harrison will kick things off for the Bulldogs in today's qualifying draw at 10 a.m. against Nicholas Kramer of New Orleans.
State's Trevor Foshey will open up his singles main draw play on Friday against Troy's Mustapha Belcora. Giovanni Oradini, Niclas Braun, Florian Broska and Strahinja Rakic all earned a first-round bye in the singles main draw and will not take the court until Saturday.
Last season, 2017 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year Nuno Borges earned the tournament's singles crown in Auburn, Ala.
In doubles, State's seventh-ranked tandem of Braun and Foshey return after reaching the finals last fall. The pair enter the tournament as the top seed in the doubles main draw, earning a bye in the first round. The duo's test will be Jacksonville State's Andres Gomez and Aljaz Kaplja.
Oradini is looking to continue his hot start to the fall, with all six of his victories in 2017 coming against ranked foes. This year's tournament will be the first appearance in the ITA Southern Regional Championships for both he and Broska.
Braun, Foshey and Rakic all saw success in last season's tournament in singles, with Rakic earning a victory against 35th-ranked Jordan Daigle of LSU on his way to facing his teammate Borges in the quarterfinals.
All of the action in Baton Rouge can be followed via live stats. Singles finalists and doubles champions of the ITA Southern Regionals advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Indian Wells, Calif., Nov. 1-5.
Also, Nuno Borges got off to a great start in the USTA Futures tournament in Harlingen, Texas, on Wednesday.
MSU's All-American breezed through his first-round match against Ricardo Rodriguez (ATP 811) of Venezuela 6-1, 6-1.
Borges advances to today's Round of 16, where he'll face another tough test against the Australian Alexei Popyrin (ATP 786). Start time for that match has yet to be determined.
Soccer
A battle between Bulldogs takes place today as Mississippi State (7-4-3, 1-4-2 SEC) travels to face Georgia (4-101, 0-7-0) in a crucial Southeastern Conference soccer match at the Turner Soccer Complex in Athens.
The match is set for 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on SEC Network+, with Jeff Dantzler and Tatum Hodge on the call. Today's contest will be State's final regular season road match of the season.
MSU is looking to bounce back after dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 decision in double-overtime at Alabama on Sunday. In Tuscaloosa, State rallied from a 2-0 deficit to send the contest into overtime with goals from MaKayla Waldner and Carly Mauldin. The Bulldogs also had plenty of scoring opportunities, attempting 22 total shots and out-cornering Alabama 9-8. High School Football
