Men's Golf

-

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Peng Pichaikool's stellar day on the links put Mississippi State in the middle of the standings after Monday's opening two rounds at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational.

Pichaikool lit up Quail Valley Golf Club to a tune of a 9-under 135 that put him in a tie for third and just a stroke off the lead entering today's final round.

“Peng played steady all day and was an anchor for our team,” MSU head coach Dusty Smith said.

Pichaikool started his day shooting a 5-under 67 that tied him for second after the opening round. He came back in the afternoon with a 68 to sit behind only Memphis' Brad Bawden and Notre Dame's Kevin Conners, the clubhouse leaders at 10-under.

He guided MSU to a pair of 5-under 253s to close the day at 10-under-par and in eighth place in the team standings.

“(Monday) was a tough day for our team,” Smith said. “I thought we did a good job competing, but we did not do the small things well,” Smith said. “We have to have better effort on the par 5s (today) in order for us to be successful.”

In his first tournament of the season, senior Taylor Bibbs got off on the right foot with rounds of 70 and 72 to end the day tied for 30th at 2-under.

“Taylor Bibbs was tough as nails down the stretch, birdieing his last four holes of the second round,” Smith said. “That was huge for our team.”

Sophomore Garrett Johnson fired a pair of even-par 72s, while Taylor Grant finished a stroke behind him at day's end. Austin Rose filled out the lineup, shooting a 6-over 150 in a tie for 67th.

The 15-team field is led by South Florida, who shot 24-under on Monday.

MSU's final tournament of the fall closes today with the final round set to begin at 7:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.

“We need to come out with a focused mindset in the morning and embrace the opportunity in front of us,” Smith said.

Men's Tennis

BATON ROUGE, La. – Sunday's success carried over into Monday, as the Mississippi State men's tennis team captured the singles title at the ITA Southern Regional Championships at the LSU Tennis Complex.

Bulldogs Giovanni Oradini and Strahinja Rakic were declared co-champions after both posted big wins to advance to the title match.

“Our goal coming into this weekend was to build ourselves and walk away more confident in our tennis,” MSU coach Matt Roberts said. “These young men rose to the challenge this weekend and built their positive view of themselves. We look forward to one more challenge (today) and will compete at a high level as we have been doing each day.”

Oradini picked up one of the biggest wins of his young career, downing Tulane's 13th-ranked and top-seeded Constantin Schmitz in a three-set battle 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the singles main draw final. In Oradini's final set, he was down 4-3 at the break and won the final three points to take the victory. Rakic also won his semifinal bout, defeating No. 77 Ewan Moore of Tulane in a 6-3, 6-4 decision to set up an all-Bulldog battle in the finals. The junior rallied from a 4-1 deficit to take the second set and the match.

However, Oradini and Rakic decided to be declared cochampions and share the title. By being singles finalists in the ITA Regional Championships, they automatically advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Indian Wells, Calif., Nov. 1-5.

“Both Gio and Strale were down a break in each final set they won,” Roberts said. “They stepped up and made that decision to push themselves every point. They will build on these moments and I'm very proud of how they are building their mental game.”

State's seventh-ranked doubles tandem of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey will also have a chance to punch their ticket to Indian Wells after notching a 6-3, 6-1 win against teammates Florian Broska and Oradini in Monday's semifinals.

Braun and Foshey will square off against Ole Miss' pair of Zvonimir Babic and Filip Kraljevic at 10 a.m. today to decide who will earn the automatic qualifier spot at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. 43, College Football SEC Standings WESTERN DIVISION
