Fire department prepped for fish fry fundraiser
The Adaton-Self Creek Volunteer Fire Department's annual fish fry fundraiser is set for Saturday and will feature food, door prizes, a raffle and an auction at the fire station.
The fire department has had the annual fish fry for around 20 years to raise money for equipment needed to answer emergency calls in the county. The fire department is located at the intersection of Reed Road and County Lake Road.
Plates of fish fillets will be sold for $10 for adults and $8 for children, with traditional sides like hush puppies, coleslaw and fries. Volunteers from the department will be cooking fish from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants may eat the food on site or get to-go plates.
The fire department will be raffling off one pistol, one rifle and a $1,000 check on Saturday evening. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each or five tickets for $20 at the event.
Local businesses like Walmart and the Oktibbeha County Co-Op have donated items to be auctioned off for the fundraising event.
“The auction will start somewhere around 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.,” Fire Chief Danny Waltmon said. “It will go past 7 p.m., depending on how much we have for the auction.”
Money raised during the annual fish fry helps cover the cost of supplies, equipment and repairs for the fire department.
“We have a certain amount of money that comes from the county, but it takes care of the trucks and the building,” Waltmon said. “If we want to do anything extra like water packs for brush fires, they don't furnish any of that. We have to buy that out of our own stuff.”
The department is also using the event as an outreach opportunity to recruit more volunteers.
