Men’s Basketball

-

Due to Saturday night’s announcement that Mississippi State’s football game at Arkansas will kickoff at 11 a.m. on CBS, the men’s basketball team has changed its tip time against Florida A&M from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The matchup at Humphrey Coliseum will be televised on the SEC Network+, while radio will be limited to WLZA96.1 FM and free audio streaming on HailStatePLUS (www.hailstate.com/plus).

This is one of the four games selected for the “Hoops In The Heartland” event, which benefits the non-profit organization, Men Against Breast Cancer. The other three games are against Green Bay (Nov. 20), Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 22) and North Dakota State (Nov. 30).

The Bulldogs opened the 2017-18 campaign last week with dominating 96-68 win against Alabama State. Aric Holman paced MSU with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his third-career double-double, while All-Southeastern Conference guard Quinndary Weatherspoon poured in 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting.

Men’s Tennis

Giovanni Oradini continued his stellar play at the USTA Pensacola Futures Monday, as he qualified for the tournament’s main draw with another victory at the Roger Scott Tennis Center.

MSU’s sophomore lefty picked up his fourth straight victory in the tournament by handily defeating Jamaica’s Rowland Phillips (ATP 1476) 6-1, 6-1. In his qualifying run, Oradini has been impressive – taking all four of his matches in straight-set fashion.

Oradini will join Bulldog teammate and fourth-seeded Nuno Borges in the singles main draw that begins today. Borges is set to face a familiar foe in Tulane’s Constantin Schmitz (ATP 1003) today at 10 a.m. The All-American Borges has squared off against Schmitz three times in his career, holding a 3-0 record against the Germany native.

On Wednesday, Oradini will open up play in the main draw against Govind Nanda (ATP 1255) of the United States.

Women’s Basketball

A season-opening victory against Virginia kept Mississippi State women’s basketball at No. 7 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 Poll.

The ranking comes after a weekend that saw MSU hoist the 2017 National Finalist banner prior to the 68-53 win against the Cavaliers in front of a program ninth-most 6,811 at Humphrey Coliseum.

The following day, the Bulldogs received their National Finalist rings during the second quarter of MSU’s football game against Alabama.

Monday’s ranking is MSU’s 57th-straight week in the poll, the seventh-longest active streak in the nation. The Bulldogs earned a 21st-consecutive week in the top 10, the fifth-best current streak in the country.

Friday’s victory was State’s 14th-straight season-opening win. MSU also won its 23rd-consecutive regular season non-conference game behind 22 points from Victoria Vivians, 18 from Roshunda Johnson and 13 from Chloe Bibby in her MSU debut.

Coach Vic Schaefer’s Bulldogs return to action Thursday, hosting Georgia State in a 7 p.m. tip at Humphrey Coliseum. MSU closes out a season-opening three-game homestand Sunday at 2 p.m. against in-state foe Southern Miss.

Both games will be streamed live online on SEC Network +. Admission to all MSU home games is $5 for adults and $3 for youth age 18 and under. Youth 12 and under can get free admission to all women’s basketball games by joining Bully’s Kids Club at www.bullyskidsclub.com. High School Football Postseason
