Vols presented state title rings

They didn't mind waiting a few extra minutes.

After winning the Class AAA State championship back on November 18, 2017, the anticipation was building for the day the Starkville Academy Volunteers they could put the rings on their fingers.

That came on Tuesday night. In front of family and friends at the SA gymnasium, head football coach Chase Nicholson presented the players, assistant coaches, support staff and administration their rings.

Nicholson had a little fun with the Vols and played a little bit of a stall tactic before giving out the rings.

it didn't matter to Starkville Academy senior quarterback Noah Methvin.

“I've waiting for so long that it wasn't that big of a deal,” Methvin said. “We've waited for a few months now. I was joking with Raegan (Richardson) sitting next to me. I've had that picture (of the ring) on my phone for about two months now.To finally have it on and to be able to feel it makes everything worth it.”

The four Vol captains, Methvin, Richardson, Noah Smith and William Wolfe, had input on the ring design and what it was going to look like.

That made Smith want to see the finished product even more.

“We've all been anxious about it since we won back on November 18th,” Smith said. “It's nice to finally have it.”

Starkville Academy finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 13-1 and swept all four games in District 2-AAA.

The season began for the Vols with a 43-21 victory over Lamar School and ended by avenging their only loss of the season with a 21-14 overtime win over Indianola Academy for the state title.

Nicholson said the night of recognizing his players turned out “exactly like you want it to feel like.”

The smiles on the faces of the players was what Nicholson wanted to accomplish because they deserved it.

“Making sure they are happy and giving them something they are going to remember is what it's all about,” Nicholson said. “It was a moment and a night about them and I hope that I pulled it off.

“I'm proud for them. I'm proud of these seniors going out, the young guys, the legacy the seniors leave for them and what we want to do in the future.”
