Are You Homesick

-

When I was traveling back and forth to my mother's home (before she went “home”), I noticed some buildings being constructed that looked foreign to Mississippi.

At first, there was a large two-story house built from adobe material, with its design similar to a hotel with balcony openings. It appeared to be able to accommodate several families. In the months that followed, another identical house of adobe was constructed beside it and a wall was built enclosing both. Things were added to the yard, which were not native to our state. I never knew who lived there, but I knew it was someone who was missing home and had decided to try to bring a part of home to Mississippi.

We have all been homesick at one time or another. Whether we were visiting a friend or were on an extended trip, we longed to be home. For soldiers, deployed for a year or two at a time, being homesick can be a major problem. They long for home. But, in reality, this earth is not our home. The Apostle Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:1-2: “Now we know that when this earthly tent (physical body) we live in is taken down (that is when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made by God Himself and not human hands.” Paul became homesick for his heavenly home. He said, “We groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling” (2 Corinthians 5:5-7).

Are you homesick? Do you long to be with Jesus? Or are you so caught up in work, family, and hobbies that you don't have time or energy to think about your real home? This life is not the final home for us. We will all live eternally – only the destination is in question. If we have accepted Jesus as our Savior, our home will be in heaven with Him. If we do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who came, lived, and died for our sins, and have not asked Him to forgive us of our sin, we will spend eternity in hell, the lake of fire, tormented throughout eternity.

Someone once asked Billy Graham if heaven was real. He said, “The only way we could know for sure heaven exists would be for someone to die and go there – and then come back to life and tell us about it. And that is exactly what Jesus did. By His death and resurrection Jesus overcame death, our final enemy. Jesus' promise is true: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies” (John 11:25).
