Martha Barwick Irby

Martha Barwick Irby, 85, passed away on Sunday night, March 11, 2018, in Russellvil­le, Alabama. Martha was born in Greenville, Ms. October 10, 1932, to the late Robert and Julia Barwick.

Mrs. Irby had lived in the North Alabama area for several years. Martha was a member of the Russellvil­le, Alabama First United Methodist Church. While living in Starkville she was an active member of the Starkville First United Methodist church.

Martha was a 1954 graduate of M.S.C.W. (now M.U.W.) She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Library Science. Along with her twin sister, Mary, she received a Master's Degree from Mississipp­i State University in 1978. Martha was an Assistant Professor Emerita from Mississipp­i State University, having served as librarian at the Mitchell Memorial Library for most of her career.

Mrs. Irby was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Downey. She is survived by her children, Kenneth Irby, Jr., Sarah Irby Beall, and Robert Irby. Also surviving are her grandchild­ren: Robert Joseph Beall, Brian Kenneth Beall, Charles Kenneth Irby, Mary Katherine Barwick Beall, Glenn Gilbert Irby, Jackson Lloyd Irby, and Madelyn Camille Irby. Her great grandchild­en are Garrison Benton Beall, Andrew Joseph Beall, and Eliza Katherine Beall.

One sister, Mrs. Frank (Ann) Davis, and nieces, Mrs. Mark (Cheryl) Guyton and Mrs. Marcia Thomas, all of Starkville, survive her. Martha had nephews Raymond Downey, William O'Reilly and Phillip O'Reilly.

On Monday, March 19th, 2018, 11:00 A.M. a memorial service will be held at The First United Methodist Church, Russellvil­le, Alabama. Reverend Bo Lloyd and Reverend Clinton Busler will conduct the service. Burial was at the Franklin Memory Garden.

Dude, as she was affectiona­tely known by family and friends, was born August 5, 1925 in Crystal Springs, MS to Carl and Evelyn Roper Taylor of Crystal Springs. She was predecease­d by her sister, Sue Taylor Bryan Mayo Neely, husband, Henry Ray Strowd and nephew, William G. Bryan, III.

Dude was an avid Mississipp­i State University fan and loved attending MSU sports events, especially baseball and football. Everything around her was “wrapped in Maroon and White!” She was presented a MSU Distinguis­hed Service Award in 1988, and she and Ray have two bricks on the Walk of Honor leading to the Eternal Flame Monument on the MSU Campus.

Dude attended Belhaven College and went on to work and retire from Mississipp­i Power and Light after 39 years of service. Dude was also hostess for many charitable events including golfing tournament­s to support the Ronald McDonald House, a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children who travel to Jackson for specialize­d medical care. She and Ray were longtime members of Broadmoor Baptist Church.

Dude loved to dance. She and Ray were frequently seen at the “Capital City Club” in Jackson dancing the nights away. As she aged, she would say, “I may not can walk, but I can still dance!”

Dude is survived by her nephews, Jim Bryan (Julia) of Crystal Springs, Dr. William S. Mayo (Cherri) of Oxford, niece-in-law, Cindy Welch Bryan of Madison, numerous cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends who loved her dearly.

Visitation will be held Lakewood Funeral Home in Jackson on Monday, March 19 from 2-3 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
