Two IFC teams win titles in Hattiesburg
For Starkville Daily News
When the dew began to settle on the pitch at Hattiesburg recently, two elite local soccer teams from Starkville had earned gold medals and brought back championship trophies.
The Impact Football Club 06 girls, coached by Abby Phillips, and assisted by coaches Sumner Davis and Rylan Moore, finished 3-1 in elite play in the tournament.
Not to be outdone, the IFC 04 boys, coached by Alan Vasquez, finished 4-0 and outscored their opponents 25-1.
Starkville Soccer Association club president Chris Driskill was pleased with the efforts, and with the overall direction of the club as he noted at the recent annual general meeting.
Registrar Tina Green announced that fall and spring registrations showed that nearly 700 players are now participating in youth soccer in Starkville, not including non-league and adult players using the soccer fields at the Sportsplex.
Driskill added that the year around activity on the fields by soccer, in addition to non-league use by football, baseball, and citizens is another reason why the club supports the recent drive by the mayor and board of aldermen to expand the Sportsplex facilities, which are already past capacity.
Driskill thanked the platinum sponsors of youth soccer here including Starkville Radiology, Callaway Orthodontics, and other major and team sponsors. Green added that parents should access www.starkvillesoccer.com for information regarding youth registration for recreational play as well as for next year’s elite program tryouts, set to begin in May.
