Starkville man arrested on drug, theft charges

A Starkville man was charged with felony drug possession after being accused of trying to take several items from outside of the Palmer Home for Children Thrift Store on Highway 12.

Officers with the Starkville Police Department arrested 30-year-old Joshua Jeffries on Sunday in the parking lot between the Palmer Home and the Army Navy Pawn Shop after seeing him behind the Palmer Home store.

Jeffries was initially charged with possession of controlled substance (methamphet­amine, felony), possession of controlled substance (Xanax, misdemeano­r), disorderly conduct, possession of parapherna­lia, and petit larceny.

Additional charges are pending, according to a press release from the Starkville Police Department.

According to court documents provided to the Starkville Daily News after a public records request, Jeffries is accused of attempting to steal two wooden tables and three cardboard boxes with various household items from the unloading area of Palmer Home.

Jeffries was also charged with felony possession of 0.3 grams of methamphet­amine and one Xanax pill found on top of loose coins in the change compartmen­t of his vehicle.

Possession of a Schedule I or II controlled substance carries a maximum prison sentence of three years and a fine of up to $50,000, under Mississipp­i Code 41-29-139(c)(1)(B).

Bond for the felony charge against Jeffries was set at $5,000.

Bond for the misdemeano­r charge was expected to be set on Monday.
