SHS baseball defeats Houston

HOUSTON – The Sarkville Yellowjack­ets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and didn't look back in getting a road baseball 9-5 baseball win at Houston on Monday.

Starkville improved its overall record to 11-9 with the victory.

After scoring four times in the first inning, the Jackets added two more runs in the third to go up 6-0.

The Hilltopper­s got two runs in the fourth inning, then the two teams traded runs in the fifth frame.

Starkville picked up two more runs in the sixth to increase its advantage to 9-3. Houston got one run in the sixth and another in the seventh, but it was not enough.

Griffin Little was the winning pitcher for the Jackets with 6.2 innings of work. He gave up five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Tae Lucious came in relief and got the final out.

Carter Bentley led the SHS 10-hit attack with three singles. Little had one single and one double, while Caleb Stewart added two singles, and Dee Petty contribute­d a double for the only other extra base hit. Jack Perry and Carter Hunt had one single each..

The Jackets return home today to host Class 6A, Region 3 opponent Murrah.
