Eupora enjoys good run of district victories

Having the pressure of an 11-0 start to the regular season was weighing heavily on the Eupora Lady Eagles softball team and a loss might not have come at a better time.

Amir Hunt’s team dropped their first game of the year last Tuesday to a tough Ethel squad and the coach was interested to see how his team responded. With Class 2A, Region 2 opponents eating up most of the rest of the schedule, he needed focus the rest of the way.

So far, he’s gotten exactly what he needed.

Two days after demolishin­g Leflore County 17-0 and 16-0 in run-rule victories, Eupora went right back to work against Winona on Thursday. Behind Delta Claire Newman’s one-hit shutout and five extra base hits from the offense, the Lady Eagles got their third-straight run-rule win as they beat down Winona 11-0 in five innings.

“We’ve got a lot of girls we can count on at any time,” Hunt said. “The girls are having a blast. They come out to practice and I heard one of the girls say, ‘I’m glad (the winning streak) is over.’”

Eupora (14-1, 6-1 Region 2) was certainly playing both loose and aggressive at the same time as it had eight hits in four innings at the plate, five walks and five stolen bases. The top three batters in the order of Alley Reed, Haley Farley and Savannah Kilpatrick were on base all nine times they came to the plate combining for five walks, three hits, three stolen bases and three RBI.
