Davidson gets SEC Freshman of the Year
State's Davidson selected SEC Freshman of the Year
It's all a part of the process. Mississippi State's Mia Davidson may have had one of the best freshman seasons in school history, but she said it would not be possible if it not for hitting coach Samantha Ricketts and the blueprint the coaches have for the program.
“Ricketts trusts us to do what we can for the team,” Davidson said. “She just tells us to have a plan and do what you have to do and everything else will come.”
Quite a bit of honors came the way of Davidson on Tuesday as she was selected the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, Freshman All-SEC and first team All-SEC.
Davidson has put up huge numbers
for the No. 25 Bulldogs in her first year in Starkville.
After coming to MSU from Orange High School in Hillsborugh, North Carolina, Davidson led the SEC in home runs with 18, total bases with 137 and slugging percentage with .797.
Davidson not only proved she could hit for power, but also average as her .384 mark leads the Bulldogs this season..
“She's special,” Ricketts said about Davidson last Saturday. “There's not a whole lot you can do to teach a kid like that. She has some of the fastest hands and best reactions. She's very perspective. She can pick up things from the pitcher. If a pitcher wiggles her left eyebrow before throwing a curveball, Mia is going to know. It's just all the little things she really does well and she's just a really special talent.”
Davidson is just the third MSU player to be chosen the top freshman in the SEC and the first since two-time All-American Courtney Bures in 2005.
The Bulldogs open SEC Tournament play in Columbia, Missouri, today when they take on Texas A&M at 11 a.m.
