MDWFP biologist to present snakehead program
Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks fisheries biologist Nathan Aycock will present a program about snakehead fish at the Visitor Education Center at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 30.
Aycock will discuss the invasive snakehead's biology, current status, and how to distinguish it from Mississippi's native bowfin. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.
The program is free with the price of admission. Admission is $2.50 for adults (ages 18-59) and $2.00 for youth (ages 3 -17) and adults over the age of 60. For additional information, call the VEC at 662-563-8068.

JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is cooperating with Responsive Management to collect game harvest information from the 2017– 2018 hunting seasons.
Responsive Management is a survey research firm specializing in natural resource and outdoor recreation issues based in Harrisonburg, Virginia. They will be conducting random phone surveys of licensed hunters. This update is a courtesy to inform recent hunting license holders that they may be contacted by surveyors with Responsive Management to ask questions related to game hunted and harvested. This will be a harvest-related survey with no opinion questions.
The survey began June 11 and will continue for about two weeks until a predetermined sample size is reached. This information is used by the MDWFP to monitor trends in hunting participation and game populations. The MDWFP thanks cooperators in advance for their participation in the survey.

JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, recently stocked Floridastrain largemouth bass into Ross Barnett Reservoir, with help from the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District and local bass anglers. Anglers set out of Highway 43 ramps near Tommy's Trading Post and assisted in the transportation and release of approximately 25,000 fingerling bass into backwater areas to improve survival.
“Largemouth bass are a popular sport fish on Ross Barnett Reservoir,” said MDWFP fisheries biologist Ryan Jones.
According to Jones, the goal is to produce more trophy-sized bass for anglers to catch and to engage those anglers in conservation efforts at the reservoir. The fish were reared at MDWFP's Turcotte Fish Hatchery, located near Canton. MDWFP's hatcheries produce fish for stocking in public waters throughout Mississippi.
