SHS teams claim district titles

MADISON – Once again the Starkville Yellow Jackets are champions of Class 6A, Region 3.

After a sweep through the regular season in the division for both SHS programs, it added tournament titles to its resume on Friday.

After the Lady Jackets defeating the Murrah Lady Mustangs 51-35, the Starkville boys capped the night's celebratio­n with a 67-60 win over Murrah.

The Lady Jackets (20-3) took a 15-9 lead after the first quarter in the girls game, then stretched the margin slightly to 26-19 at halftime.

Starkville moved out to a 35-26 advantage after three quarters, then put the finishing touches on the victory by outscoring Murrah 16-9 in the fourth quarter.

Jalisa Outlaw was the leading scorer for the Lady Jackets with 20 points, while Amaria Strong also scored in double digits with 14 points.

In the boys outing, SHS took a 13-12 lead after the first quarter and had a good second quarter to move out to a 33-26 advantage at halftime.

Even though the Mustangs edged the Jackets with an 18-15 third quarter, Starkville finished strong by outscoring Murrah 19-16 in the fourth frame.

The leading scorer for the Jackets was Zeke Cook with 20 points, while Tyler Talley added 12 points.

Now the SHS teams turn its attention to the state tournament and will have a first round bye before hosting games in an attempt to make return trips to the Mississipp­i Coliseum in Jackson.
