Clegg captures SEC Freshman Golfer of Week
Mississippi State men's golf freshman Ford Clegg captured his fourth consecutive top-15 finish Sunday with his tied-for-11th performance at the Schenkel Invitational. A week earlier, the Birmingham, Alabama, native earned a tied-for-third effort at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, good for a career-best finish.
On Wednesday, Clegg was rewarded for his consistently strong play by the Southeastern Conference, who selected him SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week.
Clegg is the first Bulldog golfer since Chad Ramey on March 11, 2014, to earn a weekly SEC award, and just the sixth in program history.
One of two golfers to play in all seven of MSU'S 2018-19 tournaments, Clegg has carded a 71.71 stroke average so far this season and four of State's 14 top-15 finishes.
Clegg's four top-15 finishes rank second among league freshmen, behind only Georgia's Trent Phillips, who has six.
At the Schenkel, where MSU took fourth place as a team, Clegg shot a 1-under 215, aided by a 69 in Friday's opening round. Clegg helped the Bulldogs win at Desert Mountain a week prior with a 5-under-211, which tied a career-low 54-hole total.
Clegg is likely to be listed on Dusty Smith's scorecard when the MSU men's golf team begins play at its third tournament in as many weeks Saturday at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. State is set to play three more regular season events this spring before the SEC Championship in late April.
