Wolverines come long way in year
It was apparent this time last year the direction that the East Webster Wolverines were heading.
The Eupora Eagles came to Cumberland with a veteran bunch in tow and one that was playing extremely well. The Wolverines were in season two under Ron Price and still becoming a team. They had started the season 1-3 but got to .500 after winning a couple of games and began to gain confidence.
When the dust settled, East Webster won a slobberknocker over their rivals and closed the season with a record of 6-7. In a sense, that game set the tone for where the Wolverines would be a year later.
East Webster went to Eupora on Thursday night in the annual Webster County Maroon Bowl and they handled the rival Eagles with ease. It was a win that exemplified just how far this program has come in three years under Price and his staff.
The Wolverines now sit at 8-1 and 2-1 in Class 2A, Region 2 with one game left. They’ve already eclipsed the six wins they recorded in each of the last two years and they’re ranked in the top 5 in the state in their classification with a second place finish in the division heading into the playoffs.
After the 45-12 win at Eupora on Thursday night, East Webster looks like a bonafide contender, while the Eagles continued to do what they can to work through the youth and lack of depth that they’ve had this season.
Eupora fell to 3-7 a year after Stephen Edwards was the Starkville Daily News Coach of the Year following his eight-win season. This year has seen the fifth-year head man of his alma mater go through a major rebuild
