Jackson State’s Jones produces in SWAC win

JACKSON — Jalon Jones threw for one touchdown and ran for another score as Jackson State beat Arkansas-pine Bluff 21-12 on Saturday night.

Jones had 162 yards passing for the Tigers (45, 3-1 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference).

The scoreless first quarter featured multiple mistakes by both teams, including a fumble and an intercepti­on by Jackson State and an intercepti­on and missed field goal by Arkansas-pine Bluff. Jones struck early in the second quarter on a 72yard touchdown throw to Terrell Kennedy III and the Tigers led 7-0 at halftime.

Jones capped the Tigers' opening drive of the second half with a 2-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead. Omar Allen's 13-yard scoring run for the Golden Lions (5-4, 2-3) closed it to 14-6 with 9:33 left in the third. Shannon Patrick hit Dejuan Miller for another Pine Bluff score, but the 2-point conversion try failed. Josh Littles returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and the Tigers led 21-12.

Patrick threw for 227 yards and a score for the Golden Lions. He was intercepte­d three times.

Alabama State 27, Mississipp­i Valley State 0

ITTA BENA — Kha'darris Davis threw for 183 yards and a touchdown and Alabama State earned its first shutout since 2012 by blanking Mississipp­i Valley State in a Southwest Conference battle.

The last time the Hornets blanked an opponent was October 6, 2012 when they beat Texas Southern, 45-0.

Davis scored on a 3-yard run five minutes into the game to put the Hornets in front, 7-0, and his 52-yard pass to Jahod Booker early in the second half made it 24-0.

Ezra Gray added a 2-yard touchdown run and Hunter Hanson kicked field goals from 39- and 40-yards.

Alabama State (4-4, 3-2) held the Delta Devils (2-7, 1-4) to just 217 yards of total offense, 100 through the air. Meanwhile the Hornets amassed 152 yards on the ground and 199 through the air.

Davis was 19 of 26 passing while Gray ran for 70 yards on seven carries.
