MABEN – East Webster scored in every way possible Friday night to open the Class 2A playoffs.

The Wolverines had a offensive, defensive and special teams touchdown as they defeated the Potts Camp Cardinals 42-0.

“I love seeing our team take care of business in round one,” East Webster coach Ron Price said. “I'm very proud of these guys”

The Wolverines started their scoring outburst as they returned a Potts Camp punt for a touchdown by the hands of Conner Shurden.

Potts Camp started a small drive down the field but its positive plays were stalled by penalties. After getting the football back, East Webster junior running back Tyrik Pittman made the Cardinals pay with a 9-yard touchdown run.

After a third and out by the Cardinals, Pittman ran 86 yards for another touchdown to put the Wolverines up 21-0.

Potts Camp struggled offensively all night but after its sophomore quarterback threw a pick-6 to the hands of Carter Flora, which was his second interception of the game. The Cardinals had dug themselves into a hole they couldn't get out of. East Webster junior quarterback Steven Betts took the ball 29 yards for a touchdown.

Coming out out of halftime with energy, Potts Camp forced a fumble at the goal line, but quickly the ball switched hands as Flora intercepted a Cardinal pass for his third interception of the game. The Wolverines capitalized on the Potts Camp mistake as senior wide receiver Daniel Rodgers carried the football 9 yards for a touchdown to close the game.

East Webster looks to stay focused in round two as the next opponent is believed to be Pelahatchie.

“Our opponents are only going to get better,” Price said. “We have to stay motivated, focused and go 1-0 every week.”
