Ginn hits the right key with Lady Wolverines

-

Life was comfortable for Jon Ginn a few years ago.

While teaching and coaching is fulfilling for him, the stress that comes with winning and losing and everything that happens in between can often strain. Ginn was leading music for a church in Pontotoc where the biggest worry might be whether or not he hit the right key. After a while, he felt a tug on his heart to pick the whistle back up.

Ginn heard from his former assistant coach Michael Seger, who was feeling a similar tug to go in an opposite direction. Seger learned much of his own coaching from Ginn many years before and was putting those principles to good use as the head girls and boys coach at East Webster, but he had decided to move to Uganda to go into missions.

Seger felt that Ginn would be the man for the job and Ginn was ready for a new challenge and a return to coaching.

“Sometimes you know that the Lord is speaking to you,” Ginn said. “I had a great almost seven years at Hope, but it got to a point where I felt like I had done what the Lord had to do for me there. It was time for somebody else to come in.”

Despite never meeting, Ginn was hired by former principal Bill Brand and his teaching license was approved quickly. He knew then that Webster County was going to be his home.

After serving a year as the assistant boys coach with Seger, Ginn took over as the head man last season of the boys and the girls teams. This year, the Lady Wolverines went from a first round exit in the playoffs to a contender in the North of Class 2A.

For the progress made with the East Webster girls team, Ginn was chosen The Starkville Daily News High School Girls Coach of the year.

The Lady Wolverines weren't afraid to schedule up in competition as they played tough programs like Ingomar, Tishomingo County, Houston, Mantachie and New Site. That went along with their regular Region 2 schedule that included the eventual 2A State champions in Calhoun City, which East Webster lost to in the district tournament championship.

The record was significantly better
