Jones College lineman Buys to finish career at MSU

-

An opportunity that Reed Buys has been waiting on for a few years now presented itself on Monday afternoon and the offensive linemen jumped on it right away.

A Vicksburg native, Buys spent last season playing offensive line for Jones College. Mississippi State’s coaching staff has been recruiting him since his high school days and following his career last season and they offered him a scholarship this week. He committed to the coaching staff on the spot.

“I can’t thank GOD enough for this opportunity,” Buys wrote on Twitter. “I’m super excited to announce that I have received an offer from Mississippi State and will be spending the remainder of my college career as a DAWG!!!”

The good news for MSU is that Buys will be eligible to come in and play immediately in 2020 due to the fact he was a full qualifier coming out of Warren Central. He turned down a few fouryear college offers to take his chance in gaining more exposure in junior college and it paid off.

Last season with Jones, the 6-5, 290-pounder played nearly every position on the offensive line and blocked for the MACJC’S leading rusher in Florida State signee La’damian Webb. He started at right tackle and also played guard and center along the way showing versatility in his game.

The former Warren Central blocker was one of the top offensive linemen in the state of Mississippi in high school. He earned a spot on the Mississippialabama All-star game roster as well and the previous MSU staff were recruiting him for most of his final year, including having him on campus for many games throughout the season.

Buys comes from a family that has ties to both MSU and Ole Miss. His father, Mark, played baseball for Ole Miss in 1977. His brother, Talbot, played offensive line for Ole Miss from 2014-17. His sister, Anne Elizabeth, was Miss Mississippi and a graduate of MSU.

The addition of Buys to this year’s roster is a boost for the Bulldogs. MSU has had two transfers during the offseason on the offensive line as rising senior starting guard Stewart Reese left Starkville to go back closer to home and play for former State coach Dan Mullen at Florida. Redshirt freshman guard Brevyn Jones transferred as well and will play his football at Illinois next season. Buys essentially takes Jones’ spot on the scholarship list.
