Picked as All-star during Elite camp

Starkville and most of Mississipp­i has been aware of Luke Altmyer’s ability for several years now, but the rest of the country is starting to catch on as well.

The Starkville High School senior quarterbac­k has emerged as one of the top quarterbac­ks in his class and picked up yet another accolade on Sunday. At the Elite Underclass­man camp in Vicksburg on Sunday afternoon, Altmyer’s performanc­e sealed the deal on an invite to the Under Armour All-american Game coming up in January in Orlando, Fla.

“It is such a special honor,” Altmyer said. “Being in middle school as a seventh and eighth grader, you never saw yourself being an All-american. Growing up watching A.J. Brown and guys like that and looking up to them so much – to join that fraternity is such an honor.”

It’s been a pretty big year for Altmyer already. After finishing up a strong junior campaign with the Yellow Jackets. He committed to Florida State back in February over offers from Mississipp­i State, Ole Miss, LSU, Missouri, North Carolina State, Oregon and many others. This spring, he added an offer from Nick Saban and Alabama.

All of that was capped by his honor on Sunday that will have him following in former Jacket Brown’s shoes as a UA Allamerica­n. His coach Chris Jones was there and noted that Altmyer told the coaches that he didn’t even have his best day.

“I think it speaks volumes of Luke,” Jones said. “I’ve seen him grow since he was in eighth grade and I thought then that he could have a chance to be special. Despite all of the accolades and the
