Shavers commits to MSU program

-

Nikki Mccray-penson is bringing her first recruiting class together in 2021 and Mississippi State's coach just got her highest rated recruit to date.

Texas native Jasmine Shavers announced her commitment to the Bulldogs on Friday, nearly two months after they made her top eight list. She picked MSU over Texas Tech, Tennessee, Rutgers, Northwestern, North Carolina, Kentucky and Arizona.

Shavers is a four star guard out of Horn High School in Mesquite, Texas and was recently elevated to that four star status on ESPN. She's considered the country's 60th best player overall and is ranked 21st nationally at her position.

“I have been playing the game all of my life, now it's time to make the most important decision of my life,” Shavers said in a video released on Twitter. “I would like to thank all of the college coaches that have recruited me to be part of their athletic program. I have been thinking about this decision over and over again. With that being said, I am committed to Mississippi State University.”

The 5-10 guard plays big at her position and can create a mismatch against opposing defenses because of her ability to hit shots from outside and create plays off the dribble. She doesn't shy away form contact and can finish at the rim.

ESPN'S Dan Olson watched her last season and called her an “athletic guard with size in the back court, 1 on 1 creator, brings feathery touch off the dribble, breaks down the defense and dishes in traffic; defends in passing lanes; offensive arsenal extends to the arc; a stock riser in the class of 2021.” A few short months later Shavers did indeed follow through with her rising stock.

Last year for Horn, Shavers averaged 18.9 points per game with 5.6 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.3 assists on her way to Offensive Player of the Year honors in her district and an All-state stamp in Class 6A in a rich state of Texas.

The Bulldogs got in on Shavers recruitment very quickly when Mccray-penson arrived as she was one of the first players that the coach offered. Mccray-penson's staff had already maintained a relationship with Shavers when they were at Old Dominion offering her in the spring of 2019. Prior to picking up the offer from MSU, she had already been offered by almost all of the teams mentioned in her top eight as well as Oklahoma State, Penn State and others.

Shavers joins two other guards in the class so far as No. 93 Kn'isha Godfrey was the first to commit and is likely to play the two on the next level while No. 87 Mia Moore looks to be the point guard in the class. It's the third time that the Bulldogs have had three or more members in the ESPN Hoopgurlz top 100, tying the 2018 class for second most. Four members of the 2019 class were in the top 100 and finished No. 6 nationally.

Provided there are no transfers from the current roster next season, MSU will have six open scholarships to give in the class of 2021.
