Hebron getting set to play another challenging slate

- By DANNY P. SMITH

Hebron Christian School head coach David Foster was looking to fill an open date on his football schedule last year.

With the help of former Mississippi State football player Johnie Cooks, the Eagles were able to fill the void.

Cooks, who is a native of Leland, has a nephew that plays for Hebron and he connected the team from Unity Christian with Foster.

“(Cooks) told (Unity Christian) to call us and see if you can get a game and we did,” Foster said. “We couldn’t compete with them. We didn’t have near enough speed to run with some of those guys. They are a good group of guys and I like the coach. They are a well-disciplined team and I enjoyed playing them.”

The Eagles have six away games and four home games scheduled for the 2020 season.

After opening the season at Marvell (Arkansas) Academy on August 21, Hebron goes back on the road the next week to Calhoun Academy on August 28.

A home date against Ben’s Ford (Louisiana) comes for the Eagles on September 4 before they travel once again to Delta Academy on September 11.

Hebron hosts Kemper Academy on September 18, then makes trips to West Memphis (Arkansas) on September 25 and Unity Christian

on October 2.

“I don’t have to go to Louisiana again,” Foster said. “(Ben’s Ford has) to come to us and that will be a district game. We open up on a long trip to Marvell, Arkansas, which will be a good team, and later in the year, we’ll have to go to West Memphis, Arkansas and play.

“That’s good competition. I’m sure Marvell will be good. They are good year in and year out. They lost a lot of players, but had a really big group of juniors and have some good athletes so they’ll have a pretty good team.”

The Eagles wrap up the regular season against Desoto (Arkansas) at home on October 9, at Columbus Christian on October 16 and against Humphreys Academy at home on October 23.
