Williams announces bid for senate seat
Starkville businessman Bart Williams announced Friday his candidacy for Senate District 15.
In a live video broadcast via Facebook, Williams introduced himself to voters and laid out his qualifications for the senate seat.
“Who is Bart Williams?” he said. “I'm a Christian. I'm a husband. I'm a father. I'm a son. I'm a business man. For the last 27 years, I've had the privledge to own Security Solutions and be a co-owner in Gunco.”
Williams said his business background has enabled him to make tough decisions that may arise representing the people of District 15.
“There's 30 families whose livelihoods depend on the decisions I make every day,” he said. “And I will make the tough decisions. I know how to get results. And I'll do what it takes to get results.”
In 2013, Williams said he led a team from the Mississippi Arms Association in introducing legislation in the state Legislature.
“In 45 minutes, that bill was terminated,” he said.
However, Williams said, his team spent the next year meeting with Legislators to garner their support. In 2014, he said, the bill was signed by Gov. Phil Bryant. Seeing that bill signed into law,
he said, gave him a feeling of accomplishing good things for the people of Mississippi.
“I want to be a part of doing good things for the people of Choctaw, Oktibbeha, Webster, Montgomery County as your next senator,” he said.
Williams said he wanted to thank Sen. Gary Jackson, who represented District 15 since 2004, for his service to the community and dedication to helping his constituents. Jackson resigned his position June 30 due to growing concerns with his health.
A special election to fill Jackson's seat is set for Sept. 22, 2020. The deadline for candidates to file for the race is 5 p.m. Monday.
