Starkville Academy has made strides in two weeks

-

It has been a good week for the Starkville Academy softball team.

After getting a 16-6 win over Hebron Christian School in six innings on Monday in Pheba, the Lady Vols were right back on the field 24 hours later, but took less than an hour to dispatch of Kirk Academy 13-1 in only two innings Tuesday.

The winning streak Starkville Academy for has grown to four games and the Lady Vols seem to be getting better with each game played.

Even though it has been an impressive stretch for Starkville Academy, it’s still not where they need to be. Head coach Lee Berryhill, his staff and the players can all probably say that, but there have been some definite strides made over the first six games of the season.

The Lady Vols are a much better team today than when it first took the field against Marshall Academy a couple of weeks ago. Anyone who saw Starkville Academy in that first game of the season and stayed with them until the recent surge can really tell a difference.

That doesn’t mean the Lady Vols have arrived in softball, but they are on the right track. When Berryhill was hired, there was no doubt that some improvement was going to be noticed in the first season and that has been the case.

Berryhill has gotten contributions throughout the team on the way to its 4-2 record.

Fallon Parker, Caralyne Montgomery, Austin Tucker and Calliope Koiva have been solid at the top of the lineup offensively. Koiva has been good in the circle and the defense is getting better behind her.

Starkville Academy will be right back in action Thursday as they continue a homestead against Oak Hill Academy. The Lady Vols are back home to start district play next week against Winston Academy. Starkville Academy will play Winston, Heritage, East Rankin and Leake twice home and away. Those are the games that will determine the postseason fate for the

Lady Vols.

There are still going to be some bumps in the road for Starkville Academy as it navigates the rest of the season. It’s one that will keep getting smoother.
