Golden Arm Award Watch List

- By DANNY P. SMITH

Stanford has already witnessed the golden arm of quarterback K.J. Costello.

It is something fans of Mississippi State football hope to see soon.

After enjoying a great three-year run with the Cardinal, Costello has taken his talents to Starkville as a graduate transfer to the Bulldogs.

Costello was chosen to the preseason watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award on Wednesday. It marked the second consecutive season that he received the recognition.

Over 25 games at Stanford,

Costello completed 495-of791 pass attempts for 6,151 yards and 49 touchdowns.

Costello started 13 games for the Cardinal in 2018 and landed a spot on the secondteam All-pac-12 team with 3,540 yards passing, which was the second-highest single-season total in team history. He completed 65.1 percent of his passes with 29 touchdowns.

MSU head football coach Mike Leach had a front row seat in watching what Costello could do while he was the coach at Washington State. That’s why Leach wanted him to be a Bulldog.

“Once he got his release and went on to the portal, we contacted him,” Leach said in February. “We played against him, and he was looking for a place where he got the chance to throw the ball more, so we feel fortunate to have him.”

Costello was already on the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which is given to the most outstanding player in college football and now he has been added the Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List. That award is presented annually to the top senior and upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee.
