For jamboree at Winston Academy

Film of last football season doesn’t help high school teams very much right now.

Starkville Academy head coach Chase Nicholson said the most important thing about playing a preseason jamboree is to get a fresh look at this year’s team on tape against an opponent.

When the Volunteers step onto the field tonight against the Winston Academy Patriots in Louisville, it gives Nicholson and his staff a measuring stick going into the season opener next week at Lamar School.

Nicholson said his quarterbac­ks are excited about the jamboree, and with good reason, but he is looking forward to being able to correct them from what he sees from scrimmagin­g the Patriots.

“It’s going to be fun (tonight), no doubt about it, but I’m ready for that coaching aspect of it,” Nicholson said. “Everybody is ready to get out there and get better. They understand the importance of a jamboree. It’s about making mistakes and correcting mistakes. You can watch film from last year all you want to and you are not correcting the same kid. I can correct Randall (Futral) 10,000 times from last year, but you are not correcting the same person.”

It’s been a different offseason for Starkville Academy and other teams in the area in having to deal with novel coronaviru­s (COVID-19) pandemic. The Vols went through the spring virtually, then eased into summer workouts.

Starkville Academy has been going through preseason practice the last three weeks and now look forward to jamboree action.
