Washington School experiences fatigue during many games

- By DANNY P. SMITH

Washington School head coach Greg Wallace knows the high amount of energy his young team plays with comes with a price.

The Generals are known for starting fast, but by the end of games, they run out of gas.

Wallace only has 15 varsity players available right now, which contributes to the fatigue problem in many games.

“The kids are doing all they can,” Wallace said. “By the end of the game, we are just coming up short. Our skilled guys are as good as anybody’s ones for the most part. We just don’t have any juice. We are starting three of four ninth graders. We’re playing really good football for about three quarters and we’re making young mistakes.”

The Generals (1-3) are coming off a 7-0 loss to Magnolia Heights. Their only win was against Centerville Academy 43-40 and the other losses were to Bayou Academy 35-6 and Pillow Academy 28-6.

Washington School will host the Starkville Academy Volunteers on Friday night.

It doesn’t matter to Starkville Academy head coach Chase Nicholson if the Generals are young or old or have trouble with depth, he knows the tradition that exists in Greenville.

“They’ve got a history,” Nicholson said. “They beat us my first year here for the state championship in 2011 and they won it in 2015. The history is fresh on their minds. We’ve played them every year I’ve been here except two.”

Even though Washington has not won as many games as it would like four games into the season, Wallace still sees a group of players working and wanting to improve.

That’s all he can ask at this point.

“The kids are really responding and are not quitting,” Wallace said. “I can’t say enough about their preparation they are up here watching two or three hours of film per week trying to get things right.”
