Five transported after Highway 182 crash
One person was flown to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo in critical condition and four others were also injured following a five-vehicle accident on Highway 182 Friday afternoon.
The accident occurred in the westbound lane of Highway 182, just before the Highway 182 entrance to Mississippi State University. The accident was caused by a rear-ending, and required the westbound lane of the highway to be shut down so emergency crews could document the scene and provide medical care to those involved.
Several agencies responded, including the East Oktibbeha Volunteer Fire Department, Starkville Fire Department Engine 3, OCH EMS, Pafford EMS, the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop G, Starkville Police Department and
Mississippi State University Police Department.
“When we arrived on scene, we had one patient trapped in their vehicle,” said East Oktibbeha VFD Sgt. Tristan Jones, who served as incident commander. “We got her out into the ambulance.”
Of the remaining four victims, two were transported by ambulance to OCH Regional Medical Center with the remaining two being transported to OCH by private vehicle with non lifethreatening injuries.
Jones said the victim who was flown to Tupelo was the only one critically injured.
“This is going to be one of the larger scenes that we typically work,” Jones said. “It’s not every day we have the whole highway shut down. Having five cars in a wreck any day is not ideal, but we’ve got to come.
“We’re glad we had every agency out here that we did, and we’re glad that we were able to take care of everybody.”
