Ewing gets opportunity as head coach of MSU women
Charlie Ewing made quite the impression during three and a half years in Starkville.
As an assistant to head coach Dusty Smith’s Mississippi State men’s program, Ewing helped the program to NCAA success.
Ewing, who was a men’s assistant since 2017-18, had a front row seat as the Bulldogs made back-to-back NCAA regional appearances in Smith’s first two years as head coach.
Being a part of that rise with the men’s team, Ewing was chosen by MSU Athletic Director John Cohen to become the seventh head women’s golf coach in school history.
Cohen made the announcement of Ewing’s hiring on Wednesday morning.
“It became clear during our search he was the right fit to lead Mississippi State women’s golf,” Cohen said in a school release. “He is an excellent teacher, motivator and recruiter, who has been one of the most sought-after rising stars in the sport. Charlie embodies the Bulldog mentality and has a great vision for the future of our program. He brings tremendous experience both as a former student-athlete and as a coach, which will be a huge positive in developing our student-athletes to their greatest potential both on and off the course.”
Ewing replaces Ginger Brown-lemm, who announced her resignation last month.
Knowledge of the women’s game is not lost on Ewing. He is the husband of former State players and Allamerican Ally Mcdonald.
Ewing values the relationship that he and his wife have with the Bulldog family.
“This university, Starkville and the state of Mississippi have treated me so well during the last three and a half years, and my wife much longer than that,” Ewing said. “Ally and I are very excited to be making a long-term commitment to a place we are very proud to call home.
“We can’t express enough gratitude toward John Cohen, Dusty Smith, this entire athletic department and the Mississippi State community for believing in me several years back and expressing that belief in me yet again with this great opportunity. I can’t wait to work with the group of young women we have and begin the recruiting process to add many more future Bulldogs to represent Mississippi State University! Hail State!”
Ewing is a native of Dallas, Texas, and was a fouryear letter winner under Smith at Vanderbilt from 2010-14.
Prior to coming to MSU, Ewing was a volunteer assistant at Vanderbilt in 2016 and held the same role in 2016-17 at Texas Tech.
