Adjusts to deliver hits

He spent most of his career running over defenders, but Steven Betts is wasting no time excelling on a newer side of the football.

Taking part in the Bernard Blackwell North/south All-star game last week in Brandon, Betts was picked the Defensive Most Valuable Player. He was selected to the roster as a linebacker and he fit in perfectly fine working that side of the ball last Saturday.

“The coaches played me at linebacker and I thought I did pretty well,” Betts said. “It was pretty fun to go out there and hit somebody carrying the ball on every play for a change. I played defense some at East Webster, but to play it full time, it was a fun experience.”

Throughout his career, Betts was the quarterback for the Wolverines. He replaced a graduating Charlie Brand as a sophomore and threw for 1,114 yards, 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions. From a young age, his running ability shined the brightest and he had 373 yards and a touchdown as a sophomore followed up by 1,614 yards and 19 scores last year and 1,152 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. He was on pace to have more yards rushing this season than his first two years combined but played in five less games.

Betts finished his career at East Webster with 3,153 yards rushing and 32 touchdowns and 2,945 yards passing, 33 scores and 23 interceptions. He also played some on defense as he had 40 career tackles, eight tackles for loss and three sacks.

“Steven is special and he meant a lot to our program over the last few years,” Wolverine head coach Ron Price said. “The players really rallied around him every game and there were most nights when he just put the team on his back and willed us to some games. We’re wishing him the best on the next level and anybody would be lucky to have him on their team.”

Earlier this week, Betts received his first offer from Southwest Community College and more schools are likely on the way. After his game in Brandon, many teams in the state are beginning to take notice.
