MSU defensive tackle enters transfer portal

- By ROBBIE FAULK

Mississippi State has another player heading to the transfer portal in 2020.

A source noted that reserve sophomore defensive tackle Devon Robinson entered on Wednesday evening. Robinson leaves the Bulldogs after three years and just one game played during his time with the Bulldogs.

Out of high school, Robinson was one of the top players in the Memphis area. The 6-6, 260-pounder played his football at Whitehaven and received offers from Vanderbilt, Louisville and Memphis during the recruiting process.

Robinson was ranked No. 38 in the state of Tennessee by 247Sports and the No. 94 defensive tackle nationally in the 2018 class. In his junior season, he helped his team to an undefeated 15-0 record and the state championship. As a senior he had 72 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks.

Since the start of Mike Leach’s tenure at MSU, the Bulldogs have had 17 players transfer and 11 of them have come during the season. However, only six of them were either starters or major contributors during their time at State.

The loss of scholarship players has made the Bulldog roster quite thin during the season, but they’re playing the best football down the stretch of the season. State has had under 50 scholarship players available since the Georgia game last month but took the other Bulldogs to the wire as well as rival Ole Miss, both games ending in seven-point wins for the home teams. State finished off the season by beating Missouri 51-32 to move to 3-7 for the year.

The freshmen have been leading the way this year as Will Rogers has commanded the offense with 1,828 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Running back Jo’quavious Marks leads the team in rushing and receptions with 59 carries for 240 yards and two touchdowns and 56 catches for 238 yards. Dillon Johnson has also had quite a bit of action at running back with 41 carries for 168 yards and four touchdowns. Johnson has 34 catches for 144 yards as well.

Jaden Walley is making the most noise of the wide receivers. The true freshman from D’iberville has 48 catches for the season for a team-high 691 yards and adds two touchdowns. The Bulldog receiver has the freshman record for receiving at MSU.

State will finish out the season by playing No. 22 Tulsa at the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas. The game at Amon G. Carter Stadium will take place on New Year’s Eve and can be seen on ESPN at 11 a.m.
