Humble approach works well for Mississippi State’s Molinar

- By DANNY P. SMITH

Iverson Molinar is taking a humble approach to his game and the progress of the Mississippi State Bulldogs this season.

So far, it has worked out well for Molinar and his team.

After averaging 22 points, 5.5 rebounds and two steals in two MSU wins last week against Missouri and Vanderbilt, Molinar was selected the Southeastern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. His career-high 24 points helped the Bulldogs defeat the Commodores 8481 last Saturday.

“Being able to read the defense and just letting the game come to me,” Molinar said about his scoring. “I’m doing a good job this year of not trying to rush shots.”

Molinar also had career-highs in rebounds with eight and steals with four. He is very fond of those numbers.

“I had to show that I’m not only a scorer,” Molinar said. “I can rebound and do other things other than scoring. I’m making sure they see me as a complete player.”

MSU head coach Ben Howland has been proclaiming how much Molinar has improved since the season began and has not been surprised with his play.

Howland said Iverson deserves to be the SEC Player of the Week because of the way he treats each day on and off the court.

“I’m happy for him because he has worked so hard,” Howland said. “He is so talented and he’s a great kid. He’s one of our main leaders. He has earned everything that he is doing.”

Molinar and D.J. Stewart Jr. have formed quite a nice sophomore duo for the Bulldogs in the backcourt. They are two of four SEC players to score in double figures in every one of their team’s games this season.

Coaches and broadcasters have bragged on the ability of Molinar and Stewart. Molinar appreciates the recognition, but just tries to block out all of the noise.

“I don’t let it affect my game,” Molinar said. “I don’t try to force stuff. Of course there is all of the talk, but i do a good job of leaving all of that on the outside and just focus on the court, so we can play as a team.”
