When Our Nest Is Shaken

- GWEN YARBER

There are times in our lives when we depend on God more actively than at others, times when we grow in our knowledge of Him and learn to trust Him more. I have felt recently that perhaps we are going through such a time, and I have been reminded of the eagle family when it is time for the baby eaglets to leave the nest. When mama eagle builds her nest, she lays a foundation of rocks, sticks, and sharp objects – then covers it with leaves, feathers, and foliage. It is a comfortable nest, until one day mama begins to pull out the soft stuff and the nest becomes uncomfortable. She is going to teach them to fly – which they were born to do!

In a recent article, which I quote extensively here, Ron Hutchcraft states that everybody’s nest is being shaken by what he called, “the coronaquake” – the contagious virus that has touched every area of our lives. “It has caused our schools to close, the stock market to tank, major world events to be cancelled, the economy to explode, futures to be rewritten…basically, it has just rocked our world – or our nest – as never before.”

Why? What is God doing or allowing? Why is He doing it? Ron Hutchcraft suggests these possibilities: God is using it to disturb the comfort and complacency of our status quo – to bring us closer together – to prune things we really don’t need in our life – to expose our idols, the things in our life that have become more important than He is – to rearrange our priorities so things that really matter become our focus – to open our hearts to Jesus.

“Maybe that is what He is doing in your life. Suddenly your security is not secure. Your “go to’s” have gotten up and gone. Your heart is fearful and searching. You need an anchor that no storm can move – That is Jesus…who loves you enough to die for your sin... Who is powerful enough to walk out of His grave. He is waiting for you to open the door of your heart and let Him come in today.”

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” Proverbs 19:21.
