Starkville Daily News

Meet the Writer

- CAL BROWN

Hello, everybody.

After close to two months of being the one who writes about all things going on in our great city, I felt like it was time to introduce myself.

My name is Cal Brown, and I have been the news reporter at Starkville Daily News as of December 7.

I am a native of Bruce, Miss., hometown of late gospel blues musician Leo “Bud” Welch.

I am the youngest son of my loving parents, Karen Arrington and Eddie Brown, and the little brother who usually gets picked on by Davis.

In May of 2020, I earned my degree in Communication from Mississippi State University and being back in Starkville has been wonderful, to say the least.

During my time at MSU, I

was an intern of the SDN Sports Desk led by our hardworking sports editor Danny P. Smith. In that internship, I covered and wrote stories on local high school sports in our area, mainly the 2019 West Point High School football team who had won their fourth consecutive state championship that season.

After my graduation from MSU, I moved back home in Grenada and was a human resources recruiter for Advanced Distributor Products, where I would conduct phone interviews with applicants in the manufacturing field.

While that was a good job, it just wasn’t my heart’s calling. I wanted to be a journalist and nothing else.

Thankfully, I got the call from SDN that they would be needing a new reporter to take Hunter Cloud’s place and that I would start on the following Monday, December 7.

So, here we are.

I am a big sports guy, especially when it comes to our Bulldogs in Maroon and White. I remember 16-year-old me being in the stands of Davis Wade Stadium with my older brother, Davis as MSU took down Auburn to take the No. 1 ranking.

Other than my unrivaled fandom to all things MSU, I also follow my favorite professional sports teams; the Carolina Panthers of the NFL, the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA, and the San Diego Padres of the MLB. I also plan on pledging my fandom to the NHL’S Seattle Kraken when they have their inaugural season in 2022. In the meantime, our new Editor and hockey fanatic, Jessica will teach me the fundamentals of hockey so I will know what is going on.

You can usually find me hard at work at Strange Brew Coffeehouse on Highway 12 drinking on a 16 ounce iced mocha and, on occasion, munching on a chocolate chip scone; if you haven’t tried a chocolate chip scone from there yet, do not do anything else before you try it, you will not regret it.

For me, being back in Starkville cannot be put into enough words. I love this city, being a member of this great community once again is humbling. I look forward to meeting everyone and making plenty of friends during my time at SDN.
