Each in SHS win

- By DANNY P. SMITH

Momentum was building for the Starkville Lady Yellow Jackets throughout Wednesday night’s Class 6A, Region 3 soccer match against South Panola.

In what was also the regular season final, Emma Wilson and Meg Rodgers began the scoring by getting goals within 2 minutes from each other and that was just the beginning as the Lady Jackets cruised to a 9-0 victory at home. The game was shortened due to the mercy rule.

“The girls played hard and some girls got playing time,” SHS girls coach Abby Phillips said. “They found the back of the net tonight. We had a bit too many shots on goal compared to the actual goals, but I’m just glad we are getting these shots off.”

Wilson and Rodgers each accomplished a hat trick with three goals each as the Lady Jackets evened their overall record at 5-51 and finished 4-2 in the district.

Rodgers said Tuesday’s practice was devoted to SHS working as a team

and that was on display against South Panola.

“When we attacked together, we could put shots in easy and slip through the sides,” Rodgers said.

Along with the goals by Rodgers and Wilson,

Veronica Dunne had a first half goal off a header, while Addison Davis and Sara Pinzon also scored second-half goals.

Once the Lady Jackets were able to established a 6-0 lead at halftime, it gave Phillips the opportunity to do a little experimenting.

“We had a few girls try out different

Phillips said.

Now Starkville turns its attention to the playoffs and will make the trip to Oxford for the first round

positions,” on Monday. The match begins at 6 p.m.

“We’ll be taking the last few days here to get some extra practice time in,” Phillips said.
