Barbara Etta Jones
Barbara Etta Jones, 84, of Chicago Il, passed away at home December 20,2020 surrounded by her friends and family.
She was born December 19,1936 in Starkville Mississippi, the daughter of the late Florella Ware Jones and Willie Luther Jones. Barbara married twice, to Jimmie Outlaw (deceased) of Starkville Mississippi and Albert Louis Hurey(deceased) of Columbus Georgia.
Barbara was born and raised in Starkville Mississippi. She grew up attending Sixteenth Section MB Church. She graduated from Oktibbeha County
Training School in 1954, then later moved to Chicago Illinois. Growing up in the segregated south, she devoted her life to civil rights, social justice, and community empowerment.
Barbara Majored in Black Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle Campus. She graduated in 1976 and became a social worker with the City of Chicago. After leaving the city she, continued her work as a social justice warrior and community advocate. She lent her expertise and devotion to organizations such as the Teen Living Program, Bobby E. Wright Mental Health Center and CEDA. She received multiple awards for her volunteer work with organizations like Neighborhood Housing Services, Roseland Redevelopment Planning Board, and The Empowerment Zone. Public Service was a way of life for Barbara. Many positions required 24hr a day dedication such as being a foster parent with Habilitative Systems and Lutheran Social Services, working in a battered women’s shelter. Her passing leaves a hole in the hearts of many.
She’s survived by three daughters; Shandra Outlaw and Beatrice Hurey of Chicago Illinois, Joyce Outlaw of Madison Wisconsin; Grandchildren Ashley and Albert James, Great-grandson Jaylen, Siblings; Connie Isabell, Paul Jones Sr. and Vermont Jones of Chicago Illinois , Fran Jones and Joan Jones of Starkville Mississippi, and countless friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.
