Weather finally starting to warm up

- By CAL BROWN

The winter storm that has overstayed its welcome is finally starting to walk out the door.

After a week of freezing rain and snow due to the record-breaking cold that kept many Starkville residents at home since Sunday, some without power, and for those who ventured out on the icy roads found themselves in a not-so-enjoyable joyride, sunshine has returned to help the thawing process, and even though roadways are improving, they may remain slick in some areas as the ice melts.

It was a week full of auto accidents on the icy roads, power outages, water lines freezing, tree branches or entire trees falling onto power lines, and

even Mississippi State’s opening weekend in baseball was pushed back to start today due to the inclement weather. However, we should hopefully see all of the wintry conditions depart by the end of this weekend starting today, according to senior meteorologist of the National Weather Service in Jackson Mike Edmonston.

“The good news is we’re looking into Sunday and Monday with a warm-up and Saturday as well,” Edmonston said.

Edmonston also said Sunday’s high will be between the 50s and 60s, which should be enough to melt the ice in most areas of the state including Starkville.

The weekend forecast for Starkville notes a high of 46 and a low of 25 for today, a high of 55 and a low of 39 for Sunday, and a high of 48 and a low of 32 on Monday to start the new week.

Several local restaurants in town have already opened their doors back open to public, restaurants such as Arepas, Bin 612, Bulldog Burger Company, Chicken Salad Chick, Cater’s Market, Dave’s Dark Horse Tavern, Central Station Grill, Harvey’s, The Camphouse, Casa Bravo, Rosey Baby, 1883 Smokehouse, Two Brothers, and more.

Many of the establishments named above are listed as take out, drive-thru, and to-go orders only as of Friday, but that may have changed today.

As local businesses start to open back up as soon as everything all clears up, it has never been more important to support local businesses after a week like this has been.

“Buying local helps our economy by creating jobs in our community,” said the Greater Starkville Development Partnership in a social media post on Friday. “Local businesses create jobs as well as hire more local service providers like accountants, graphic designers, and others. More jobs means lower unemployment and a healthier local economy.”

In response to the post from the GSDP, Ward 2 Alderwoman Sandra Sistrunk said that you can be an important part of Starkville’s economic development by just buying local when you can.

Mayor Lynn Spruill said on Twitter that Thursday’s trash pick-up route will be made up today starting at 10 a.m.
