Wiggins announces transfer from State

- By ROBBIE FAULK

In the middle of a tumultuous season for first-year coach Nikki Mccraypenson, Mississippi State has its first transfer of 2021 in the form of reserve forward Xaria Wiggins.

After playing 14.4 minutes a season ago and starting in three games, Wiggins struggled through health issues early in the year and never got back into form this season playing in 11 games and 13.1 minutes a contest. She announced her decision earlier this week that she would be looking elsewhere to play two more seasons.

“I want to thank you all for an incredible three years in Starkville, and thank you to Mississippi State University for the opportunity to pursue my degree while also playing the game I love,” Wiggins said in a post on social media. “Thank you to the fans for your continued support and last but not least, thank you to my teammates. I will always cherish the times we had together! With that being said, I have decided to enter my name in the transfer portal.”

A blood clot in Wiggins’ lungs kept the junior from Virginia off the floor for the non-conference portion of the schedule. It was still a struggle for her to get back on track as she finished averaging 2.5 points a game and 1.2 rebounds. Wiggins finished her career with 3.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 72 games played.

While the season is technically not complete as the NCAA Tournament brackets will be selected on Monday, Wiggins is no longer listed on the roster and a source said is no long a part of the team.
