Meet the Eye Doctor of the Year
One of the most important senses in the human body is sight, and Mitchell Eye Care optometrist Andrew Mitchell works tirelessly to help his patients keep their vision as sharp as can be.
Mitchell was voted as Best Eye Doctor by Starkville Daily News readers for the Best of Starkville, and he is incredibly thankful for the honor.
“After just being here for three years, we’re definitely newer here in town, so it’s definitely a huge honor to win that and to even be nominated for that. I hope I live up to that honor,” Mitchell said.
After he graduated from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis in 2016, the Louisville native had spent two years working under an already-established practice at Eye Care Associates in Laurel.
After that stint, he and his older brother Stephen, who is also an optometrist, started practicing together at Mitchell Eye Care on 450 Highway 12.
“Starkville is kind of my home away from home since I went to Mississippi State. So, it’s been
good being back here and being able to serve this community,” said Mitchell. “I enjoyed my time in Laurel, but it just wasn’t the same. I love being back here; these past three years of owning this practice have definitely been more fun than just working as an employee at
another practice.”
When he started his collegiate studies at Mississippi State after he graduated from Winston Academy, Mitchell already knew he wanted to go into medicine of some sort. But it was his older brother who helped him determine what exact field to go into.
“When I was at Mississippi State, I always knew that I was going to go into medicine of some sort,” said Mitchell.
“My brother and I are five years apart, when I was getting ready to be a senior at MSU, he was finishing up optometry school. So, I talked to him while trying to decide the exact path I wanted to go on. He had been practicing for about a year, at the time, and he kind of talked me into it. I was really intrigued about the aspects of the job, so I applied to SCO and went that route. I have no regrets, I enjoy it. It’s been a fun profession so far.”
