Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays held at MSU
The Mississippi State track and field program will host the annual Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays today and Saturday at the Mike Sanders Track and Field Complex.
MSU head coach Chris Woods and his Bulldogs are ready to jump into the much-anticipated outdoor track and field season.
“Our student-athletes are really excited to have this opportunity to compete, especially outdoors again, because they understand now how precious every opportunity is because it can be taken away from you at any moment,” Woods said. “There’s a lot of excitement buzzing around our program and around the country, and our kids are excited to open up their outdoor campaigns in front of a home crowd. Hopefully we’ll have a good meet, a good showing, and start the outdoor season on the right foot.”
The Javu group of the Bulldogs’ program is itching to compete, with some of the athletes having not competed for a year or more.
Caroline Standley holds the freshman javelin record, while Sarah Blake holds the school record. Tyriq Horsford finished in third behind two other Bulldogs at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships, with transfer Sindri Gu mundsson being in fourth while representing Utah State. Gu mundsson was also third behind two Bulldogs in 2018. Newcomer
DJ Jónsson looks to add to the prowess of Javu in his freshman season.
Spectators are permitted at the meet on a first-come, first-serve basis. The spectator entrance of the meet is on the baseball side of the Shira Complex. Guidelines and protocols can be found at www.hailstate.com/ gamedaytrack. Concessions will be available for purchase on the grounds and restrooms will be available.
The meet schedule, facility maps, and more information on the meet can be found on the home meet information page. It will be updated with a link to live results as well as the heat sheets for each day, as well as results at the conclusion of each day of the meet.
Competition today at the Bulldog Relays is set to start at 10 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw. Saturday’s action will begin at 11 a.m. with both the men’s and women’s shot put.
Saturday will also feature the senior ceremony for 22 student-athletes and two managers toward the end of the meet.
After hosting the first of two home meets to open the outdoor season, the Bulldogs travel next to Gainesville for the Florida Relays on April 2-3.
