Montgomery’s Jewelry celebrates 75 years

- By CAL BROWN

Montgomery’s Jewelry is celebrating its 75th anniversary of business in Starkville this year.

For 75 years, Montgomery’s Jewelry has welcomed their customers and guests into their business on Main Street, which is a remarkable milestone to say the least.

A family owned and operated business that was started by Blackie and Mary Montgomery, their son Woody and his wife Robin continue the tradition behind the local jewelry business.

Woody took ownership of the business in 1987, and throughout the years, the family has seen its share of return and repeat customers. From Mississippi State students to local families, there are so many people who entrust the business with their family heirlooms.

Michelle Sharp has been the manager at Montgomery’s Jewelry for over forty years, and she talked about the main things that have made the store so successful over the past 75 years.

“One thing, you have to have good customer service, then you also have to fluctuate with the trending of the market, and also be efficient with some of the work we do here,” said Sharp. “We’re very lucky to have Mr. [Woody] Montgomery do a lot of the customer and repair work, and that contributes to being able to fulfil the customers’ need. I think those kinds of contributions have helped make the business a huge success.”

Their age is not what also makes them unique in Starkville, as they have also been voted as Best Jewelry Store by Starkville Daily News readers for the Best of Starkville.

“It’s kind of a pat on our back for all of the hard work we’ve put in here, so to be recognized for that work is really great. We really appreciate the recognition and the business over the years, and we hope to continue for many more,” Sharp said.

Sharp said one of the biggest things that has made Montgomery’s Jewelry so successful over the years is their effort to make the customer happy and welcome every time they walk through their doors.

“We try to treat our customers how we would want to be treated; be courteous, remember their names, follow up with them after the purchase. When a customer is looking for something for a birthday or another occasion, we try to help them out the best we can,” said Sharp. “Whether they’re hometown people or out-of-town people, we always try to make that connection with them. Some people will see you and be like ‘hey, how are you’ and that’s it. But if you make them feel welcome and you are informative with them, they’ll like it and they’ll want to come back”

As Sharp said earlier, the store is very thankful for the continued support and business over the years, and they look forward to many more years with their old and new customers.
